KIDS' CHOICE The Academy of Motion Picture Arts may have decided that Matthew McConaughey, Cate Blanchett and 12 Years a Slave were the Best Actor, Actress and Picture of 2013, but kids don't see things the same way. The 27th annual fan-voted Kids' Choice Awards aired live on Nickelodeon Saturday night, with Mark Wahlberg fending off one slime attempt after another before finally getting blasted with the green goo. Jennifer Lawrence was not in attendance, but she won Favorite Movie Actress, while Adam Sandler and Robert Downey, Jr. were on hand to pick up their Favorite Movie Actor and Favorite Male Buttkicker awards. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire won Favorite Movie and Frozen won Favorite Animated Movie.
MAGIC MIKE Things seem to move pretty quickly in Hollywood when Channing Tatum is involved with a project. Tatum only revealed last month that he was writing (with Reid Carolin) the script for a follow-up to Magic Mike and now Tatum's co-star in the original, Joe Manganiello, has revealed that cameras could begin rolling as early as this fall, with an official announcement forthcoming. Steven Soderbergh is still "retired" and will not direct the sequel, titled Magic Mike XXL, but IndieWire claims "sources close to the camp" have disclosed that Soderbergh protege Greg Jacobs will take the helm in his stead. None of the original cast members have officially been signed on the sequel, as of this time, but many are expected to return.
MARVEL Joss Whedon has proven once again what a nice guy he is by recording an apology to the city of Seoul in advance of Avengers: Age of Ultron commencing production there on Mar. 30th. The production will shut down several roads and a bridge, which will undoubtedly cause traffic headaches for the residents of South Korea's most populous city. Whedon said that he is "really grateful and excited" to be shooting in Seoul and that he is sorry that he is going to "mess it up a bit," but that "it will be worth it."
PIXELS Peter Dinklage is negotiating to join Adam Sandler, Josh Gad and Kevin James in Pixels, reports THR. Chris Columbus will direct the movie, which is based on a 2010 short about '80s video game characters coming to life and attacking NYC. James will play the president, who asks his childhood friends (Sandler & Gad) to help him stop the video game characters from destroying the world. Assuming he signs, Dinklage will play a loudmouthed former Space Invaders champion.
LUCY For those moviegoers who love seeing Scarlett Johansson kick butt in a superhero movie, but are tired of seeing her do it with red hair, you will soon have the opportunity to see ScaJo kick butt in a superhero movie as a blonde. Johansson will reprise the role of the red-tressed Avenger Black Widow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier this week and play a blonde drug mule-turned-metahuman with mind powers in Luc Besson's new movie, Lucy, this summer. ScaJo's blonde locks were revealed in the first-look still image that appeared in the latest EW.
Lucy is yet another strong female character in Besson's film pantheon that includes Nikita (La Femme Nikita, Matilda (The Professional), and Leeloo (The Fifth Element), among others. Besson told EW that he loves "to see a woman as a very strong character," saying that it's "like cooking: sugar with a bit of salt, and Lucy definitely can get salty." The first trailer for the movie drops Apr. 2nd; the movie opens Aug. 8th.
