Britney Spears' Most Iconic Moments
08.05.14 by Mandy
From Mouseketeer to chart-topping recording artist to down-and-out trainwreck and all the way back to comeback queen, Britney has had quite a career. In honor of the former teen sensation and the career that has lasted far longer than anyone would have predicted, we're going to run through Britney's most iconic moments.
Get the story behind the meltdown
...Baby One More Time
Sure, she'd worked in show business as a child, but Britney's pop-culture dominance all started with some pig tails, a short pleated skirt, and a pair of above-the-knee socks. The "...Baby One More Time" video launched Britney into stardom, stirred up controversy, and explored the multitude of ways that a teen girl can bare her midriff. The single remains Britney's biggest chart-topper to date, and though it's now fifteen years old, we must confess we still believe (still believe).
Back in 2002 Britney Spears starred in her first feature film, and sadly it remains her only big-screen role — where's the Crossroads sequel, Hollywood? Despite that fact that the movie scored only 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, Crossroads is nonetheless the quintessential teen road-trip movie.
The End of the World
When one pop-culture phenomenon references another pop-culture phenomenon, an iconic moment is inevitable. Indeed, when Doctor Who played the "traditional ballad" "Toxic" to bid adieu to Earth, an iconic Britney Spears moment was born, despite the fact that Britney, herself, doesn't ever appear on screen.
Oops! She Did It Again
One image that has been burnt indelibly into the brains of anyone who has seen it is Britney dancing in a red latex jumpsuit. The "Oops!... I Did It Again" video is a strange mashup of astronauts, manual laborers, the necklace from Titanic and mock turtlenecks, but the jumpsuit still manages to stand out despite all of those other elements competing for the viewers' attention.
Like a Virgin
Every year, the MTV VMAs strives to have a moment that will be talked about for weeks, or sometimes years, afterwards. In 2003, that moment was Madonna and Britney Spears enjoying an open-mouth kiss. Sure, Madge also played kissy face with Christina Aguilera only a moment later, but it was the Britney kiss that caused a media superstorm.
Usually when an artist or performer is working on a new project, they'll put out a press release to let people know about it. That is definitely not dramatic enough for Ms. Spears. When Britney needed to announce that she was going to have a residency in Las Vegas, she went out to the middle of the Mojave desert in a helicopter where she met up with hundreds of fans and Good Morning America to tell the world the news. Because if you're going to make a huge comeback, why not do it in style?
2001 Video Music Awards
Of all the dancers that have been on stage with Brit over the years, one performer really stands out as having the most intense on-stage chemistry with Britney. No, we don't mean her ex-husband, Kevin Federline; we're talking about an albino Burmese Python named Banana. While the entire VMA performance of "I'm a Slave 4 U" was pretty salacious, it was her dance with Banana that stole the show.
For even more on Britney, there's another chance to watch her Hollywood Scandals on REELZ this Sunday at 2p ET/ 11a PT.
