MTV caught up with Robert Downey Jr. on the London set of Sherlock Holmes and talked about the upcoming Iron Man 2 and Avengers movies.
According to Downey, Iron Man 2 is going to focus on the man "beneath the armor" and what Tony Stark does with his new responsibility as the iron-clad hero. In the sequel, Downey will likely get to play Tony Stark's darker side, which, in Stark's case, probably means alcoholism. Downey added: "I think we could have more excitement. We could use a love triangle or two." Looks like he'll get both. A recent casting notice calls for a female lead who is "beautiful, speaks several languages fluently and is equally proficient in martial arts" and "30s, Eastern European, brilliant, gritty" male lead. Crimson Dynamo and Black Widow perhaps?
Once Iron Man 2 opens May 7, 2010, Marvel will release Thor (July 16, 2010) and First Avenger: Captain America (May 6, 2011) next before Avengers hits theaters in July of 2011. Downey is excited, if cautious. "Nothing that happened in 'Iron Man' is really outside the realm of possibility. Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants, it warrants much further discussion."
And Marvel is looking for Avengers to be huge. "That means if we don't get it right, it's really going to suck," says Downey. "It has to be the crowning blow of Marvel's best and brightest, because it's the hardest thing to get right. It's tough to spin all the plates for one of these characters."
