Universal Pictures will produce an updated, cyber-punk version of Videodrome, the 1983 Canadian thriller starring James Woods and directed by David Cronenberg. The film is being written by Ehren Kruger, who recently collaborated on the script for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with famed movie scribes Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman.
The original film centered on Maxx Renn (Woods), the sleazy president of Civic TV Channel 83. Renn's quest for ratings leads him to air a sadistic program called Videodrome, a plotless program depicting violent torture and death that is actually a mind-altering infectious virus. The new production will update the film with sci-fi themes and near-future concepts such as nano-technology for a modern audience.
Ehren Kruger will produce with partner Daniel Bobker.
