Actor Robert Downey Jr. has spent the last decade climbing back into the limelight. Now he seems poised to take over Hollywood, one film franchise at a time. Downey Jr. charmed the world as Tony Stark in Iron Man, a film that defied expectations and turned a B-list hero into a $585-million juggernaut. This Christmas, Downey Jr. hopes to capture lightning in a bottle once more by reinventing Sherlock Holmes. With the latest news, it appears Downey Jr. is going for the hat trick.
An unnamed source has revealed that Universal Pictures is looking to resurrect Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles with none other than Downey Jr. as the vampire Lestat Du Lioncort, a character featured in both previous attempts to adapt Rice's books. It's been 15 years since Tom Cruise donned a blond wig and frilly shirt to play Lestat in Interview With the Vampire, and seven years since Stuart Townsend played a black-leathered Lestat in Queen of the Damned — a critical and commercial failure that seemed to spell the end of the franchise.
No further details were offered about which Rice book will be adapted or whether Lestat will be a featured character or simply the narrator. What is apparent is that Universal Pictures is hoping to cash in on the newly invigorated market for vampires, thanks to the HBO series True Blood and the Twilight phenomenon.
