Collider.com recently spoke to Shauna Cross about forthcoming YA book-to-movie project If I Stay. Cross is currently set to write the adaptation, with Twilight's Catherine Hardwicke attached to direct.
Of the movie, Cross said:
It's about a young woman who gets in a terrible car accident with her family, and it follows the 24 hours of her outside of her body in a coma. We're just about to go to cast. It';s got an edge to it and it's funny and heartbreaking and it's a little Lovely Bones-esque. There is definitely a lot of humor in there but it's definitely more dramatic than I've done before. It's been an amazing experience and it's an incredible story.
When asked about Hardwicke's involvement, Cross said, "She is attached to a lot of things. It sort of depends on which lands first. I don't know where Hamlet is at right now." If I Stay author Gayle Forman is definitely happy about the prospect of a Hardwicke movie, saying:
I've been a Catherine Hardwicke fan since Thirteen, and I just think she is one of those teen-savants. There are people who are good at working with/dealing with teens. And then there are people who seem to have never stopped being teens in some essential way, so it's effortless for them to interpret the teen world. I've never met her, but judging from her work, Catherine Hardwicke falls into that latter category. Plus, her visual style! And she's so imaginative. As you can see, I'm over the moon at the prospect of her working on If I Stay. It makes me feel like my baby is in good hands.
With If I Stay set to be a teen version of The Lovely Bones, we're betting Summit are going to spend some money on this one. Drama, romance and tragedy -- what more could they want?
