Rejoice, ye fans of Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi!
A month ago, Grindhouse Pictures announced that it would re-release the 1981 cult horror-comedy The Evil Dead back into theaters in 2010. Now, Fearnet writes that Grindhouse has given us official release dates, plus a poster.
The announced dates are as follows:
– January 8-9: Uptown Theatre, Minneapolis
– January 15-16: Esquire Theatre, Denver
– January 29-30: Sunshine Cinema, New York
– February 5-6: Egyptian Theatre, Seattle
– February 19-20: River Oaks Theatre, Houston
– February 26-27: Inwood, Dallas
– March 5: Nuart Theatre, Los Angeles
The Evil Dead is still fun to watch today for its ingenuity and ability to juggle both straight horror elements and hilarious satire. But the gruesome dismemberments and multi-colored bodily fluids (not to mention a very disturbing, not-so-subtly-suggestive use of tree limbs) were enough to earn the movie an X rating (changed to an NC-17 when the X rating was laid to rest in the early '90s).
Sam Raimi has of course reached stratospheric heights since then, crafting two larger-budget sequels and helming the massively successful Spider-Man franchise. Campbell went on to relative fame (maybe not fortune) as a cult-movie icon, using his leading-man looks and his impeccable timing to forge a career out of schlocky comedy genre-hybrids, such as Bubba Ho-Tep and the TV show The Adventures of Brisco County Jr..
