Sylvester Stallone Broke His Neck Filming The Expendables

It wasn't enough for writer-director Sylvester Stallone to load up his new movie, The Expendables, with a veritable who's who of '80s and '90s action heroes. He also wanted it to be made the way movies used to be made during the period of testosterone-fueled popcorn flicks that he and co-stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis once dominated.
I wanted to do a film that was more about men, doing things that we did back in the '80s and '90s that were a little more mano a mano — actual, physical stunts.
Unfortunately for Sly, real physical stunts resulted in a real physical injury. Stallone recently revealed to FHM magazine that one of his co-stars put the hurt on him during the filming of one of the movie's fight sequences.
Man, it was seven guys, kicking each other's ass, one guy tougher than the next. No joke, our stunt guys were begging for mercy.
Actually, my fight with "Stone Cold" Steve Austin was so vicious that I ended up getting a hairline fracture in my neck. I'm not joking.
I haven't told anyone this, but I had to have a very serious operation afterwards. I now have a metal plate in my neck.
The Expendables also stars Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Randy Couture, and Terry Crews.
