Back in July, it was announced that DreamWorks was in the process of acquiring the rights to the as-yet-unpublished book I Am Number Four, the first in a planned series of young-adult sci-fi books by James Frey, author of the scandalous addiction "memoir" A Million Little Pieces, and Jobie Hughes.
Now, THR reports that D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye) has signed on to direct the movie adaptation for DreamWorks, written by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar. Michael Bay, rumored at the time to be interested in directing, will act as producer, along with Benderspink.
I Am Number Four tells the story of a small group of survivors of an alien species from the planet Lorien who take refuge on earth after a competing race tries to wipe them out. The title character disguises himself as a human high school student named John Smith, but soon discovers that his species' alien enemies are still on the hunt for him and his fellow survivors. The first of six books, I Am Number Four will be published by HarperCollins Children's Books in the fall.
