Wanted 2 Scrapped After Angelina Jolie Pulls Out

Despite recent comments made by Wanted creator Mark Millar that the script for Wanted 2 "is almost ready" and that director Timur Bekmambetov will start shooting "soon," New York magazine's Vulture blog has reported Universal is scrapping plans for a sequel. According to the report, Universal's decision was made after Angelina Jolie pulled out of the project.
Due to the incredible success of the first movie, there had been talk of a sequel as far back as July 2008. James McAvoy and Terence Stamp had apparently committed to reprising their roles, and director Timur Bekmambetov said that he was open to bringing Jolie's character back from the dead.
No explanation was given for Jolie's departure from the sequel, though it's worth mentioning that her involvement in Wanted 2 had never officially been confirmed. In the same interview in which he said that the script was almost ready, Millar did mention that Jolie was one of the people "to please" regarding the script for Wanted 2, so it's possible she simply did not care for the way her character would be resurrected and decided to pass. If the script had been retooled to bring her back and she decided to opt out, it would make sense that Universal would scrap the movie rather than try to recast her role.
