Marvel Studios recently announced that Hugo Weaving would be starring in director Joe Johnston's The First Avenger: Captain America as Cap's longtime nemesis and Adolf Hitler's right-hand man in the Marvel Universe, the Red Skull. Now, it appears that the Red Skull won't be the only villain from Cap's rogues gallery to be making the leap from the printed page to the silver screen. According to THR, British actor Toby Jones (Frost/Nixon, W) is in negotiations to appear in Johnston's WWII superhero movie as the evil Nazi scientist Arnim Zola.
A lesser-known character from Cap's pantheon of villains, Arnim Zola first appeared in Captain America #298 in 1977. Zola was a biochemist and genetic engineer working for the Nazis during WWII who created many cloned aberrations, as well as a device that allowed the transference of brain patterns from one body to another. Zola used this technique to transfer Hitler's mind into a new body following the war and also used it to transfer his own mind into the body of a specially modified body lacking a head. Where the head should be rested a device called the ESP Box that Zola used to control his creations. A monitor located in the chest of the body projected a giant, distorted image of Zola's face. Zola has used his mind transferance technology to survive into the modern era, effectively becoming immortal.
It's unknown at this time if the Arnim Zola in the movie will resemble the comic book version, which would require the heavy use of visual effects, or if he will simply be the human scientist, pre-mind transfer. However Zola will be rendered, Jones would seem to be an ideal candidate for the role since he is both an accomplished actor and an experienced voice actor, having voiced Dobby the House Elf in the Harry Potter series of movies.
The First Avenger: Captain America is scheduled to go into production in England on June 28th. The script was written by Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus. Chris Evans will play the lead role of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, with Sebastian Stan playing his sidekick, "Bucky" Barnes.
