Director Barry Sonnenfeld had previously suggested that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were set to return for Men in Black 3 and he was not wrong.
Deadline reports that Columbia has confirmed the return of both stars and has given the sequel a release date of May 25, 2012. Sonnenfeld will also returning for the third installment, which will be shot in 3-D. Previous reports had Josh Brolin set to replace Jones, but will instead play a younger version of Jones's Agent Jay character as Men in Black 3 will utilize time traveling. Steven Spielberg will serve as an executive producer on the sequel, with David Koepp (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) and Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) have each taken turns writing drafts of the screenplay.
In what will be the third movie in the series, the sequel's Memorial Day opening will be a first for Smith, as Columbia had already set aside the July 4th weekend for their Spider-Man reboot. Since the blockbuster opening of Independence Day in 1996, Smith has owned the July 4th weekend. Both of the previous Men in Black movies opened during that weekend.
