Gerard Butler to Become a Machine Gun Preacher
05.11.10 by Ryan
For the past few years, Gerard Butler has gone from romantic comedy to action movie and back to romantic comedy, but his latest effort is going for the heart. Up next, Butler will take on the role of a real life reformed drug-dealer Sam Childers who found God and headed to Africa to start an orphanage and stop the proliferation of child kidnapping in the Sudan and northern Uganda.
Deadline reports that the script, appropriately titled Machine Gun Preacher, was based on Childers' memoirs and adapted by writer Jason Keller for director Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace).
Michelle Monaghan (Eagle Eye) will play Butler's wife Lynn, who kept the Childers family together back in Detroit while Sam was off fighting kidnappers in Africa. Academy-Award nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) will play a close friend of Childers in a role that is reportedly instrumental to the plot.
Lionsgate will release the movie, which will start shooting this summer. No release date is currently scheduled.
