Peter Jackson Will Direct The Hobbit ... If He Can't Find Anybody Else

Soon after news broke that director Guillermo del Toro was walking away from directorship of LOTR prequel, The Hobbit, producer/director Peter Jackson told a New Zealand newspaper that he would step in ... if there was no other option.
If [directing the films is] what I have to do to protect Warner Bros’ investment, then obviously that’s one angle which I’ll explore... The other studios may not let me out of the contracts.
Jackson's manager had this disclaimer to add...
[Peter Jackson can't consider directing] at this time because he has commitments and obligations to other projects. That said, he and Fran will stop at nothing to protect this franchise and the investment made by New Line, Warners and MGM.
The "commitments" mentioned are primarily The Adventures of Tintin and its sequel -- a joint effort with Steven Spielberg. So, it sounds to us like they're looking for a replacement for del Toro, but that Jackson will take the helm as a last resort to save the studio's interests.
More from Jackson...
The key thing is that we don’t intend to shut the project down... We don’t intend to let this affect the progress. Everybody, including the studio, wants to see things carry on as per normal. The idea is to make it as smooth a transition as we can.
