The Bourne Legacy Gets a Familiar Face in Writer

Universal is not giving up on Bourne 4. Paul Greengrass, director of both The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, decided not to return for the sequel in December, after which Matt Damon countered that Greengrass might return if they can get the right story, at one point suggesting that Bourne 4 might be a prequel. In February, Greengrass admitted that he had "moved on", but that hasn't stopped Universal from attempting to solidify a story for Bourne 4 regardless of knowing whether Greengrass or Damon will return.
To solve it's story issue, Deadline reports that Universal has hired screenwriter Tony Gilroy, who worked on all three Bourne movies, to write the treatment for the fourth Bourne, tentatively titled The Bourne Legacy (though, confusingly, it won't be an adaptation of The Bourne Legacy novel by Eric Lustabader). Gilroy is also tasked with creating what is being called "the Bourne bible," which, presumably, will help Universal guide the franchise in the right direction.
Universal is already eying a 2012 release date, so clearly they are confident in Gilroy's abilities. Let's hope that Greengrass and Damon share a similar sentiment.
