Director Shawn Levy's new movie, Real Steel, just went into production this month and already the first still image has been released online, courtesy of USA Today. The movie takes place in a near-future world in which human fighters have been replaced by robot boxers. The released image depicts "Noisy Boy" and his trainer/promoter (played by Hugh Jackman), an ex-fighter who discovers the robot in a junk pile and decides to take it out on the Robot Boxing circuit.
Though the robot in the still doesn't have the most unique design — Tron meets Shogun Warriors — what is interesting is that it is a real 8-foot-tall robot, rather than a digital element. Levy told USA Today that Steven Spielberg, who is executive-producing the movie for DreamWorks, encouraged him to blend motion-captured robots with actual animatronic giants.
There are some things only visual effects can pull off. But when you give an actor a real thing, in this case a real 8-foot-tall machine, to interact with and do dialogue opposite, you get a more grounded reality to the performance.
Jackman said that he was blown away when he saw the metal behemoth for the first time.
The moment of walking in and seeing these robots, my jaw was on the floor.
Real Steel also stars Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, Anthony Mackie, Hope Davis, James Rebhorn and Olga Fonda.
