Battleship Recruits Alexander Skarsgard

Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgard
has landed the lead role in Universal
's movie adaptation based on the Milton-Bradley
board game, Battleship
Directed by Peter Berg (The Kingdom, Hancock). Skarsgard will star as a "straight arrow" naval officer alongside Taylor Kitsch, who was cast a few months back and is currently filming John Carter of Mars in the red rock desert of Utah. Battleship will be Skarsgard's first major starring role, although you may remember that he was one of the early front-runners for Marvel's comic book movie Thor--losing out in the end to Chris Hemsworth.
Movies adapted from video games and amusement park rides have all had a pretty dismal track record at the box office, so it will be interesting to see how Hollywood handles a full-length movie about a board game which has only a few 30-second commercials from which to draw any storyline. From what we've heard, it goes something like this. An international naval fleet joins forces to battle an alien armada whose otherworldly ships have the capability to dance on the ocean surface like water skeeters.
Frankly, I don't recall any of this when in 1982 I shouted out, "H-6!" and sunk my sister's battleship.
Shooting starts this August down in Hawaii, but Battleship won't be released until 2012, so we'll have a long time to ponder and dissect the choices made by studio executives. Stay tuned to Reelz.com for updates.
