Kevin Smith's Red State Moving Forward

For nearly three years, filmmaker and comedian Kevin Smith has been talking about making Red State, a "political horror movie" inspired by Fred Phelps, the controversial Christian minister who says AIDS is God's punishment for homosexuality. The movie took a huge hit when Smith's usual backers, the Weinsteins, took a pass on the production. Smith was also sidetracked with two other movies, Zack and Miri Make a Porno and then Cop Out, but he recently told E! Online that Red State will finally be going into production next month.
Red State is what we're shooting in August. It's a political horror movie, essentially. We're still casting right now, but I don't want to cast anybody that anybody knows because that takes you right out of the flick. The idea is what's going to sell the movie.
