No Eva Mendes in Ghost Rider 2?

For a while it looked like Nicolas Cage might be replaced in the upcoming sequel to 2007's Ghost Rider due to a looming November production deadline that could have sent the rights to the character back to Marvel Studios and its parent company, Disney. Cage dispelled those rumors when he confirmed he would appear in the sequel, tentatively called Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and that he was "excited" to work with Crank directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor on the project. As for whether Cage's co-star, Eva Mendes, will return for the sequel, it seems unlikely.
When SuperHeroHype asked the actress if she would be retuning, Mendes replied, "No, unfortunately."
The response shouldn't come as a surprise. The script for Ghost Rider: The Spirit of Vengeance was written by David Goyer nine years ago, and would have no knowledge of the character Mendes played in the first movie.
Producer Michael De Luca has described the Ghost Rider 2 script as a "really intimate kind of redemption story" that is "very brutal." The movie will go into production in mid-November, right around the time of the rights deadline.
