Avengers Director Joss Whedon Explains the Casting of Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo

Now that Marvel has unveiled the cast of the upcoming The Avengers at the San Diego Comic-Con, director Joss Whedon spoke to MTV about why the latest Avengers recruits — Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner — were the perfect actors for their respective roles. Whedon said that Renner, who will play Hawkeye in the movie, would keep the role from becoming "silly."
The thing about Hawkeye, he’s got his bows and arrows, you need somebody who’s very very down to earth, who’s very grounded... you understand why he likes to be far away from things and then shoot at them.
Marvel president of production Kevin Feige told IGN how Renner came to be cast in the role and that The Avengers is only the beginning for the character.
We'd talked to Renner before ... and it sort of floated around out there and he got nominated and he had this great success with Hurt Locker. And then the rubber sort of hit the road and we realized we were actually going to put this character in The Avengers and we went back to see if he was still interested and he was... we hope to develop a standalone franchise for him after The Avengers.
As for Ruffalo, who will be the third actor to play Bruce Banner, a.k.a. the Hulk, since 2003's The Hulk, Whedon revealed that Ruffalo was his "first and only choice for Bruce Banner."
I’m stunned that we landed that, just stunned. He has what I remember loving about the show... you just look at him and you go through it with him, he invites you in in a way that [no] other performer has since Bill Bixby. He is a guy who’s been beaten up by life, but not defined by that. That’s what I want from Bruce Banner, is a guy who’s still getting it done, even though he has his problem.
