Hollywood's batting average remaking foreign films is about .500. When it takes on French farce it's about half that. How's this Americanized version of they darkly funny The Dinner Game (1998)? Consensus is Carell saves the day. Just barely.
"...an uproarious odd-couple remake of Francis Veber's hit French farce The Dinner Game..."
— Peter Debruge, Variety
"Though not as guffaw-rich as previous efforts by the talents involved, it comes close enough to the mark to please their fans..."
— John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter
"What makes the soufflé rise is the actors. Steve Carell is a comic wonder as the film's No. 1 schmuck."
— Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
"...a nice, safe comedy of tolerance and repentance — a subpar Carell-and-Rudd odd-couple buddy movie."
— Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
"...Dinner for Schmucks is underdone sitcom fodder that forces a cast of exceptional and almost always adroit comedians to tough it out with irreparably bland and thoughtlessly broad material."
— Nick Schager, Slant Magazine
