Fansite Guest Blog: What Is Vampire Academy About?
07.30.10 by reelz
When we first blogged the news that movie rights had been optioned for the best-selling Vampire Academy book series, we asked "Do we need another teen vampire movie?" That answer was a pretty resounding "yes" (just check out the blog comments) — with the few "no's" mostly coming from series fans who feared the movie wouldn't do the books justice.
It seems that this Richelle Mead series is beloved by many Twilight Saga fans — and has characters that even self-proclaimed "Twihaters" could (and do) love. To find out more about the series and the movie fans hope to see made from it, we went directly to the experts. For this first Vampire Academy guest blog, Tina and Sabrina from lildhampir give us an overview of the story.
In the teen Vampire genre, Twilight stands on top. Fortunately for those who struggled with the excessive amount of sparkly vampire romance, you can take a breath of relief.... Unlike Twilight's indecisive lead character, Bella, and the extremely romantic sparkle-in-the-sunlight vampires, Vampire Academy has a total badass, take-charge lead character, Rose Hathaway, and actual fight-to-the-death action scenes that are worthy of a vampire genre title.
...Rose Hathaway, a young Dhampir (half-vampire, half-human) and her best friend, Princess Vasilla "Lissa" Dragomir, a Moroi (mortal vampire with elemental power) take off from their private boarding school St. Vladimir, as it was the only way Rose felt she could protect Lissa. St. Vladimir Academy knows it must get the girls back and protect them from the Strogi (evil vampires), so they recruit Dimitri Belikov, a Guardian (Fully Trained Dhamphir that protect Moroi), to bring them back. After the girls are safely returned, Rose realizes she is completely behind and must play catch up to become not just a Guardian, but Lissa's Guardian. Rose needs to train hard with Dimitri while she safely navigates the drama of the Academies social life, which consists of jealous classmates that would literally kill to have the automatic popularity Rose and Lissa have. Since that is not enough, Rose must also keep Lissa safe from the evils she can't seem to escape....
