Two of Hollywood's sexiest "supers" are apparently in competition for the same role, and it has movie "fanboys" drooling all over their keyboards as fan forums and chat rooms fill up with fantasy scenarios involving the actresses cat-fighting over the part. According to Heat Vision, both Scarlett Johansson, who played Black Widow in Iron Man 2, and Blake Lively, who recently wrapped filming as Star Sapphire in Green Lantern, both recently tested for the lead role in director Alfonso Cuarón's (Children of Men) 3-D space thriller, Gravity.
Written by Cuarón and his son, Jonás [incorrectly referred to as Alfonso's brother in the Heat Vision article], the plot of Gravity centers around a female astronaut who struggles to return to her daughter on Earth after her team is hit by space junk while attempting to fix the Hubble telescope. Originally set up at Universal with Angelina Jolie in the lead role, the project almost fell apart after Jolie dropped out, but Warner Bros. quickly snatched it up, signing on Robert Downey Jr. to play one of the astronauts in a beefed-up role. Marion Cotillard has also screen-tested for the female lead role.
David Heyman (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) of Legendary Pictures is producing Gravity for Warner Bros. and it is expected to go into production early next year. Oscar-winning U.K. effects company Framestore (Avatar, Clash of the Titans) will provide the visual effects.
