Producer Bryan Singer recently revealed a wealth of information about the soon-to-be-in-production sequel to Fox’s X-Men movie franchise, X-Men: First Class. Singer discussed everything from the time period the movie will be set in and the types of costumes and technology that the young X-Men will use, to the villainous organization at the heart of the plot against the X-Men and the villainous character that Kevin Bacon will play. Now, co-producer Lauren Shuler Donner has also opened up about First Class, as well as offered insight into the planned X-Men Origins: Wolverine sequel and the Origins spin-off movie, Deadpool.
In an interview with ScreenCrave from the red carpet of the recent Saturn Awards, Shuler Donner said that she felt that a prequel was a "good way to re-enter the franchise," rather than to carry on with a fourth X-Men movie with new actors. She went on to say that, because of the long history and enormous cast of the X-Men comic books on which the movie is based, she didn’t feel that fans would have any problem with seeing younger versions of the characters they have grown to love in the original trilogy of movies.
I personally feel that the X-Men franchise is kind of like Marvel in that there’s a lot of characters, there are a lot of stories, 40 years of comics and that we can make multiple movies. It’s not like Spider-Man where there is a Spider-Man and you follow him. This is the X-Men and there’s a world. In that world, we can tell many stories.
In his recent interview, Singer admitted that First Class would not be following the origin of the X-Men as told in the comic books. However, with regards to Wolverine 2, which will be set in Japan and based on one of the most famous Wolverine stories from the comic books, Shuler Donner said that it will "follow the comic pretty closely…really closely."
As for the recent rumor that Ryan Reynolds’ turn as the ring-slinging title character in Warner’s Green Lantern could derail Fox’s planned Deadpool movie, Shuler Donner cited the legacy of another famous actor as proof that Reynolds should be able to pull off playing two different comic book characters from two competing comic book companies.
[Deadpool and Green Lantern are] very different. It’s like Harrison Ford doing Star Wars and Indiana Jones. DC and Marvel are different universes with different movies. …the more popular and well known he is the better.
X-Men: First Class is slated to go into production in London on August 31st. Wolverine 2 is set to go into production in January 2011.
