It was reported in July that Paramount was thinking of retooling the upcoming sequel Mission: Impossible 4 so that Tom Cruise would get to mentor a younger operative. After searching for their prospective candidate, Paramount has picked Jeremy Renner.
Deadline reports that Renner has landed the role just days after reporting that Christopher Egan (Letters to Juliet), Kevin Zegers (Frozen)and Renner's The Hurt Locker co-star Anthony Mackie were all testing for the part this week. Those tests were canceled when Paramount decided that Renner was the man to grow with the franchise should Cruise ever decide to leave.
Director Brad Bird (Incredibles) will make his live-action directing debut with Mission: Impossible 4, which features a script from Alias writers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams is producing, while actors Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames have been announced to return.
