Karl Urban Promises "Gritty, Hardcore" New Judge Dredd Movie

For those who are only aware of the character of Judge Dredd from the groan-inducing 1995 movie starring Sylvester Stallone, the fact that Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) is producing a new, 3-D Judge Dredd movie through his DNA Films comes as a bit of a surprise. What most people don’t know, however, is that Judge Dredd stories have been published for more than three decades and that the comic book version of Dredd is far grittier than the campy Stallone movie version. Actor Karl Urban (Star Trek), who recently revealed that he will lay down the law as the new Judge Dredd, told MTV that the new movie is in "no way related" to the 1995 movie and promised the tone will be faithful to its comic book origins.
I can say that the producers of this film are going to make a very gritty, hardcore, faithful adaptation of the comic. Mr. [John] Wagner, who created the character, and Jock, one of the key artists, have been on board as collaborators right from the beginning.
