A soldier returns home after his tour of duty in Iraq in The Dry Land and struggles with readjusting to civilian life. The movie opened the Albuquerque Film Festival, a nod to the city where it was filmed. Hollywood Dailies co-host Stephanie Simmons talked with Golden Globe–winner America Ferrera, who worked on the post-war drama with her fiancé, director Ryan Piers Williams.
You can see the Hollywood Dailies interview clip below, after more from Simmons about her conversation with Ferrara.
The Dry Land is an emotionally twisting drama about post-traumatic stress disorder — quite a change coming from America's lead role in the comedy series Ugly Betty. In my opinion, she's one of the few actors in Hollywood that can bounce back and forth from TV to movies, without criticism. she's also not an actress you can "pigeonhole." As gorgeous as she is in person, she's very believable as the frumpy Betty Suarez and as the suffering girlfriend in The Dry Land.
I have a feeling we'll be seeing her in many more dramatic roles in the future. Or maybe not? America doesn't have any movies currently in production right now, so perhaps she’s keeping her schedule open for some wedding planning? America, who was also an executive producer on The Dry Land, told me how nice it was to be able to work so closely on and off set with Ryan. She even joked saying, "We could never hide from each other!"
