Marvel's Runaways Changes Start Date and Casting Requirements
Posted 09.01.10 by Ryan
Marvel's first post-Avengers movie, the teen superhero team Runaways was poised to start shooting in January, but Production Weekly reports, via their Twitter account, that the date has been changed.
Update: Marvel's “The Runaways” (aka "Small Faces"), is scheduled to begin filming in March in L.A.
That's not the only change Marvel is making for the movie. When the initial casting notice for the movie was released, the race of the female roles was left ambiguous and unspecific. Racebending immediately pointed out that one of the characters, Nico Minoru, was, in fact, Asian American, but only described in the casting notice as "uniquely beautiful" without mentioning that Asian American actresses would be best suited for the role.
Marvel responded to the Racebending report, issuing a statement to the site that the movie's casting would stay true to the source material.
To address your concern over casting for the role of Nico, as we do with all of our films, we intend to stay true to the legacy and story of the comic when casting these parts. Thus, our goal is to cast an Asian American actress as depicted in the comic series and the casting notice will be adjusted accordingly.
The casting notice has been changed to include "Asian American" in the character description.
Peter Sollett will direct Runaways, from a script by writer Drew Pearce, based on the comic book created by Brian K. Vaughn. No release date for the movie has been announced.
