The sequel to 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth scored some firepower with the announcement that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson would replace Brendan Fraser in the second installment. New Line isn't stopping there. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is getting another adventurer to team up with Johnson and the returning Josh Hutcherson.
Michael Caine is joining the cast of the 3-D sequel as Hutcherson's grandfather, according to THR. Journey 2 has Johnson and Hutcherson traveling to a, well, mysterious island to rescue the missing Caine. His role won't be a cameo; in fact, the 77-year-old actor will be featured in action scenes including one that involved giant bees.
The sequel, loosely based on Jules Verne 1874 novel Mysterious Island, will be directed by Brad Peyton (Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore) and will begin production in late October in Hawaii.
