The late Swedish author Stieg Larsson died before the first novel of his Millennium trilogy of thrillers, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, was published. The series took off worldwide, and has already been adapted into movies in Larsson's native Sweden, the last of which, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest will open in limited release in the U.S. on October 29. Not to be outdone by the Swedish, Hollywood has elected director David Fincher to create the American adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which is currently shooting in Stockholm, Sweden. The movie concerns a journalist (Daniel Craig) and a computer hacker (Rooney Mara) who team up to solve the 40-year-old disappearance of a woman.
The Daily Mail has released set photos from the production, which show Craig shooting one of the opening scenes of the novel on the steps of a Swedish courthouse. ComingSoon has photos of Mara coming out of her trailer, revealing what she will look like as character Lisbeth Salander.
While Mara may look much like her Swedish counterpart Noomi Rapace did in the Swedish version, Fincher revealed to Swedish site SvD that the American Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is not a remake.
Steve Zaillian has written the new screenplay, and he has based it on the [Stieg Larsson] book and made his own version. Sure, there are scenes that will resemble ones in the Swedish film, but it is the book that we are filming. I’m looking to try to catch Sweden. I hope I can find an atmosphere reminiscent of Chinatown.
Helping Fincher out with his adaptation is three new cast members. Fincher revealed in the report that Joely Richardson (The Last Mimzy), Steven Berkoff (Just for the Record), and Swedish actor David Dencik have been added to the cast, though their roles are unknown.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens December 21, 2011.
Stellan Skarsgård and Robin Wright also star.
