Rhys Ifans to Play the Lizard in Spider-Man?

Earlier this week, Columbia Pictures announced that Welsh actor Rhys Ifans was cast as the villain in director Marc Webb's upcoming reboot of Spider-Man. What was not announced was what character Ifans will play. Rumors have mentioned Venom, but The Wrap reports that they have "learned" that Ifans is playing a different character: Dr. Curt Connors, a.k.a. the Lizard.
In Columbia's official statement, Webb said that "what sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker," which certainly does describe the Lizard, who has a long friendship with Peter Parker in his Dr. Connors form. Webb also said that Rhys' "incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character."
Whether the Lizard will indeed be the villain is still in question. The report cites no "source," nor has the report been confirmed by the studio. It is, however, a pretty fan-friendly rumor considering Dylan Baker played Connors in both Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, but never transformed into his later ego.
The Spider-Man reboot will open on July 3, 2012. Andrew Garfield will assume the title role, while Emma Stone was recently cast as Peter Parker's love interest, Gwen Stacy.
