Zack Snyder Says New Superman Movie Is Not Linked to Other Movies

Even though the announcement that Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) will be directing the new Christopher Nolan-produced Superman movie has squelched the debate about who will be at the helm, that has barely made a dent in the number of rumors about the movie that continue to circulate on the internet. Fans are speculating about and debating everything from which actor will land the title role; to which of the Man of Steel's rogues gallery of villains will be making an appearance; to whether Superman: The Man of Steel is a prequel, a sequel or a remake of Superman Returns. While we're unlikely to get the answers to all of those questions any time soon, Snyder has confirmed that The Man of Steel will not be linked to previous movies.
When asked about who might be cast as Superman during a red carpet interview from the premiere of his latest movie, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, Snyder's wife and producing partner, Deborah Snyder, jumped in and said that "it's way too early" to talk about casting, to which Snyder simply added, "Yeah." And, when he was asked about the rumor that the Kryptonian villain General Zod will appear in The Man of Steel, Snyder gave the cryptic comment that the Zod news was "just a rumor." However, his response to the question posed to him by the French web-site Filmsatcu about how The Man of Steel relates to the other Superman movies was pretty cut-and-dry (roughly translated from the original French source).
As I have already explained, the film will focus on the early days of Superman, so there will be no links to the other movies. This is not a remake then. Similarly, although I still can not talk about the script, I can assure you that this new Superman will not be based on any particular comic book story.
Snyder went on to say that, because of all of the promotion he was doing for Ga'Hoole, he hasn't "really had time to work on" The Man of Steel. Of course, this begs the question, "When will he have time?" After all, after he's done promoting Ga'Hoole, Snyder will have to get back to work on his next movie, Sucker Punch, which is currently in post-production, and then start making the rounds to promote that movie. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. is under deadline to get Superman: The Man of Steel into production as soon as possible in order to meet the 2013 release deadline and avoid further legal action from the estates of Superman creators Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel.
David S. Goyer, co-writer of both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, is currently working on the Superman script, which is based on an idea conceived of by Nolan.
