Harry Potter: Monsters, Music, and a Magical Staircase
10.19.10 by REELZ
As we count down the weeks until Part 1's November 19th release, we'll be bringing you weekly "Muggle Minute" segments from Hollywood Dailies and a blog from ReelzChannel correspondent Jeremy Parsons, who traveled to England earlier this year to tour Harry Potter locations and visit the Deathly Hallows set.
In his second blog, Jeremy visits the iconic staircase just outside the Hogwarts Great Hall.
Alright, Muggles, in my last post I talked about my trip to Christ Church College in Oxford, where I went inside the dining hall that served as inspiration for Hogwart's Great Hall. Next on my Harry Potter location tour — my guide, Jonathan, and I moved just out the main entrance of the dining hall to check out the large staircase leading up to the door.
Virtually everything you see in Oxford drums up images of old-world England and the Potter films for fans of the books and movies. So, with that in mind, this was hardly "just" a staircase. Plus, the stairs are almost a side note when you glance up at the magnificent arching, ornate ceiling that rises many feet overhead. Truly breathtaking!
If your Muggle memory serves you well, you'll remember these stairs from the scene in Sorcerer's Stone where professor McGonagall greets the young first-year wizards and witches, giving them the lowdown on the sorting ceremony they are about to undergo. The stairs were also featured in Chamber of Secrets when Harry meets Tom Riddle for the very first time.
As Jonathan shared, filmmakers were logistically unable to shoot "Great Hall" scenes in the dining hall in Christ Church, but they were able to use this staircase for those less-consuming key scenes. Although, if the onslaught of tourists was anything like it was the day I visited, I'm sure the Potter crew would have had their hands full!
And, of course, the fanboy in me couldn't help but walk up and down those stairs a couple of times hoping to channel some of that Potter magic. (Once again, Jonathan humored my request, even joining me for the staircase reenactment.)
More locations to come...
