Colin Farrell Heading to Mars for a Total Recall

Director Len Wiseman's (Live Free or Die Hard) remake of Total Recall is close to filling its lead role. Actors Colin Farrell, Michael Fassbender, and Tom Hardy could reportedly land the lead role initially portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1990 original.
Wiseman would like to start shooting next March, which makes timing an issue for the production. According to THR, the scheduling makes Farrell the frontrunner for the role since the Irish actor will wrap production on the crime drama By Virtue Fall in time to start Total Recall. The other two actors may be too busy.
Fassbender is currently shooting X-Men: First Class and will start work on an independent movie called Shame with British director Steve McQueen once First Class is finished. According to the report, Fassbender could also take a role in the upcoming adaptation of The Hobbitt, which would make Fassbender very much unavailable for Total Recall.
Hardy, meanwhile, is also in high demand after appearing in Christopher Nolan's thriller Inception. Hardy is currently shooting the comedy This Means War with director McG, then will reunite with Nolan for Batman 3 next year with the delayed Mad Max: Fury Road to start sometime after that. That leaves Farrell as the most available actor of the three, though no offers have been sent to any of the potential leads yet.
Like the original, the Total Recall remake will be based on the Phillip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," which follows a man who dreams of a trip to Mars and who eventually believes he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony to fight its ruthless leader. Salt screenwriter Kurt Wimmer was hired by Columbia Pictures to adapt the story in what the studio describes as a "new, contemporized adaptation."
