Tony Scott Confirms He'll Direct Top Gun 2

When news of a sequel to 1986's Top Gun was first reported, it was hard to think of it as anything other than rumor. While the original movie is still highly popular after 24 years, one would think that if a sequel was real, it likely would have happened already. The news of such a sequel, however, is very real, especially after director Tony Scott
confirmed to HitFix that he will return for the tentatively titled Top Gun 2. In fact, Scott revealed that he plans to start work on the sequel before a script arrives, reportedly from The Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie.
I'm not waiting for a script. I'm going to do my homework. I'm going down to I think it's Fallon, Nevada, down near New Mexico and it's a whole different world now. These computer geeks — these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night.
It was funny, because I was on a plane actually coming back from Vegas, rock climbing in Red Rock, and the guy sitting next to me was all hungover. He must have been in his late 20's and he was one of these kids. He said, "I partied all night." And I said, "What do you do?" "I work [with unmanned aircraft in] the Air Force." But they operate these drones like it's war games, but it's for real. These guys are still test pilots and they manned the drones when they were first running them.
Scott confirmed that the Top Gun sequel won't be a "remake" or a "reinvention" but will be a "new movie" that Scott will likely shoot after he finishes his next project, which could be the comic book adaptation of Nemesis. Scott would not confirm that Tom Cruise would return as Maverick, but the original Top Gun might consider joining in a supporting role.
