The Muggle Minute and More Harry Potter Locations
10.26.10 by reelz
As we count down the weeks until Part 1's November 19th release, we'll be bringing you weekly "Muggle Minute" segments from Hollywood Dailies and a blog from ReelzChannel correspondent Jeremy Parsons, who traveled to England earlier this year to tour Harry Potter locations and visit the Deathly Hallows set.
In this third installment, Jeremy visits the tree where Moody turns Malfoy into a ferret and we talk to Jim Dale, the many voices of the Harry Potter audio books, in the latest Muggle Minute.
After spending some time in Christ Church for our last two locations, we went outdoors for the next stop on our Harry Potter location tour. We headed across town to the New College cloisters — one of the other schools at Oxford. Walking into this historic structure was something special, but then as we made our way further, tour guide Jonathan took us into a large, grassy, open courtyard where the sun beamed in through the clouds. This courtyard had a bold, defining feature — a massive old tree that was situated back in the right corner branching out over a significant portion of the courtyard. I could immediately understand why filmmakers thought this to be a defining location for a memorable Harry Potter encounter. It had the look — I mean, the New College Chapel was founded in 1370!
You may remember a great moment of satisfaction for Harry during Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in which Harry and Draco Malfoy get into a skirmish under this exact giant tree. Just before Malfoy casts a spell on Potter during the feud, Professor Moody appears and transforms the sinister taunter into a squeely little ferret. The students are all amused as Moody tosses Malfoy the ferret around with his wand.
Jonathan explained that this quaint, serene space was in quite a frenzy during filming — with production trucks lining the streets outside and cast and crew buzzing around. Hard to image that kind of activity on this quiet day. Jonathan also shared that people on his tour often climb into the tree and jump out — looking just like a ferret — reenacting that famous Potter movie moment. I resisted the urge!
