Director Baz Luhrmann is filling out his cast for his adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. With Leonardo DiCaprio set to play Jay Gatsby, and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, Luhrmann told Deadline that, after reading several actresses for the character of Daisy Buchanan, he has cast Carey Mulligan in the role.
Regarding the role of Daisy Buchanan, I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world's most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting. However, specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: "Hello, Daisy Buchanan."
Whether this means that The Great Gatsby will be Luhrmann's next project is not determined, but the director claimed that the process of reading actresses with DiCaprio was "encouraging."
The results from the workshop process on The Great Gatsby have been very encouraging. There are a few elements that I feel need to be resolved before I would categorically state that this is my next film.
Luhrmann's trepidation over the adaptation is understandable. Fitzgerald's most widely known work, the novel has been translated into several movies, the most recent being a 2000 TV movie with Mira Sorvino as the Daisy. The most notable adaptation is the 1974 version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, which may be more widely remembered than the 1949 version with Alan Ladd and Betty Field.
