Over the Thanksgiving weekend, reports revealed a release date for writer-director James Gunn's Super, which Gunn has been developing since 2003. follows a short order cook named Frank (Rainn Wilson) who decides to become a superhero and fight crime after his wife (Liv Tyler) leaves him for a drug dealer (Kevin Bacon). Gunn took to his website to confirm the release date.
It’s true: Super will be opening on April 1st, 2011. That first week we will be in only Los Angeles and New York. However, on the following week, April 8, 2011, we will be in fifteen to twenty of the twenty-five biggest markets in the United States. Around that same time, we will also be available on VOD. And, after that, only God knows — perhaps more cities, perhaps not. It depends a lot on what you guys demand and want.
Gunn also released the "first photo" of Bacon in the movie, as he sits down to breakfast with Rainn. Gunn also revealed a photo of Ellen Page, who plays Rainn's sidekick Libby, who is revealed to be "waiting to try out killing someone with her cool new Wolverine claws."
For those that think Super sounds a little bit like April's Kick-Ass, Gunn has heard it before, admitting in September that the similarities don't matter since "ours is a little darker and he's an adult." Besides, as Gunn points out, "there's 3,000 bank heist movies."
