Director Gore Verbinski was recently hired to helm Disney's planned The Lone Ranger movie that has Johnny Depp attached to star as Tonto, the Lone Ranger's Native American partner. But who will play the enigmatic masked crimefighter in the white hat? In a recent interview with ET, Depp offered up two of his picks to play his partner in the movie.
There's so many interesting possibilities out there. Brad [Pitt] would be great. [George] Clooney would be great. Don't know who it's going to be just yet.
Depp, who is part Cherokee, went on to say that he plans to honor his Native American heritage with his performance of Tonto.
Native Americans in cinema, over the past however many decades, have been treated somewhat shabbily. This one has plans to rectify that.
Originally, the The Lone Ranger script was to be written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (who had a hand in writing the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie that Verbinski directed and who wrote the second and third movies that Verbinski directed). However, in February came the announcement that Revolutionary Road screenwriter Justin Haythe had been hired to pen the script. It is still unclear whether he was hired to fix up the script written by Elliott and Rossio or whether he started from scratch. No other cast announcements have been made and the movie does not yet have a start date.
