Neill Blomkamp Pitching Sci-Fi Follow-Up to District 9 with Sharlto Copley as the Lead

It's unclear just exactly what director Neill Blomkamp's next movie will be, but it seems likely that he plans on remaining in the sci-fi genre that he tackled so well in last year's surprise hit District 9. The movie was made on a shoestring budget — for a modern sci-fi movie with extensive special effects — and went on to earn more than $210 million at the worldwide box office. Blomkamp said back in January that his next project will be sci-fi, but with "sociopolitical ideas" inside a "Hollywood action film," but he didn't give any indication of what that might be.
Recently, a freaky, mysterious video credited to Blomkamp for something called AGM Heartland appeared in the iPad digital edition of Wired Magazine (issue number 18.12), but some speculate that the video is for a web series and not a feature. Now, Deadline has reported that Blomkamp is shopping around a sci-fi project called Elysium as his next feature and that his District 9 star, Sharlto Copley, is attached to headline it.
Blomkamp supposedly has a deal with Universal and MRC, but according to Deadline's "insider" source, the director is "taking meetings all over town" to pitch Elysium and that the "sweepstakes to distribute Elysium is wide open." The project, which Deadline's insider believed was being pitched with a graphic novel accompaniment, is said to be generating "a lot of interest from every studio." Deadline had no details on the movie other than that it will take place "in the far future on another planet" and contain those "sociopolitical ideas" that Blomkamp alluded to back in January. Only Copley is said to be attached to Elysium at this time.
