USA Today has scored the first official image of the upcoming sequel Fast Five, the fifth movie in the Fast and the Furious franchise. The photo depicts a stare-down between franchise star Vin Diesel and newcomer Dwayne "Not the Rock Anymore" Johnson, who joins the sequel as Luke Hobbs, a federal agent on the trail of Diesel and Paul Walker, after 2009's Fast and Furious ended with the duo on the run from the law.
Fast Five director Justin Lin, who also directed Fast and Furious and 2006's Fast & Furious 3: Tokyo Drift, told the publication that casting Johnson gave a boost to the sequel.
If you're going to do a Fast and Furious movie, you've got to go bigger each time. People thought it would be impossible to get Dwayne. But he didn't show up looking to cash a paycheck. That's pretty amazing, for a star like him to join the fifth part of a franchise. That says a lot about him and the fans.
Johnson however, admitted he joined the sequel to continue the work he began in the revenge movie Faster. "One of the things I've always loved about the franchise — the reason I think it's been so successful over the years — is that they never stop trying to up the action," said Johnson.
Fast Five opens April 29, 2011. Returning favorites Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Sung Kang, and Gal Gadot co-star in a script from Wanted screenwriter Chris Morgan.
