Monsters, Inc. 2 To Be a Prequel?

Despite Hollywood's appetite for them, Pixar, for the most part, has stayed out of the sequel game. Aside from this year's Toy Story 3, the studio's only other sequel was 1999's Toy Story 2.
With the third Toy Story becoming not only Pixar's highest-grossing movie but also the top movie of 2010 and the No.1 animated movie of all time, it's not surprising to see Pixar jumping on the sequel-wagon themselves. To be fair, though, Pixar did announce sequels to Cars and Monsters, Inc. long before Toy Story 3's $415 million box-office haul.
Now there is news that one of those announced sequels isn't a sequel at all but a prequel.
Several sites are reporting that Pixar is actually planning a prequel to their 2001 hit Monsters, Inc.
According to rumors, the prequel will focus on the story of Mike and Sulley's time at University of Fear, and how they started off as enemies but soon became friends. The source of the rumor comes from a 2011/2011 catalog Disney gave to theater owners. It is not even sure if John Goodman or Billy Crystal would reprise their roles as the voices of Sulley and Mike, respectively.
However, Pixar is busy right now with not monsters but cars. The studio's next film is this summer's Cars 2. While Pixar got away with bringing Woody and the gang back for a third installment, the animation powerhouse has gotten some flack for going with a sequel to Cars, a movie that many regard as Pixar's weakest (the movie has a 74 percent rating at RottenTomatoes.com, which for a Pixar movie is low. The rest of Pixar's flicks are in the 90 percent range - other studios should be envious).
Pixar is also working on some original projects, including Brave, Pixar's first fairy tale. That movie is slated to open in June 2012.
