Lena Headey Cast as Villain in Dredd

Every comic book movie needs a villain, and director Pete Travis's adaptation of Judge Dredd, simply titled Dredd, is getting one. Fansite JudgeDreddMovieNews was the first to report that Lena Headey, known for her performance as Queen Grogo in 300 and as Sarah Connor in the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV show, has been cast as the movie's "villain and gang-leader, Madeline Madrigal a.k.a. Ma-Ma." Dredd is currently shooting in South Africa, and Headey began work last week. Headey sent her fans a greetings from South Africa on her official Facebook page.
While Headey's message could be considered a confirmation, The Playlist confirmed that the British actress would appear in the movie, and offered more details about Ma-Ma, whom they describe as Ma "the matriarch of a drugs gang" that distributes a "reality-altering narcotic" called SLO-MO. Ma-Ma also presides over "an enormous apartment block called Peach Trees" where most of the action is set. According to the report, the character was also described in the Alex Garland script as "heavily made-up and scarred, in her later 50s/early 60s, and enormously fat." Whether those aspects of the character have been dropped when Headey was cast or whether the actress will wear prosthetic make-up is unknown.
Headey joins a cast that is led by Karl Urban as the helmeted lawman, alongside Olivia Thirlby (Juno, Solitary Man), who plays Dredd's rookie partner, Cassandra Anderson. Dredd is produced by Danny Boyle, and is based on the original comic book created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra and not the 1995 Judge Dredd movie starring Sylvester Stallone. Urban has promised that he will keep the helmet on while playing the iconic
character in what he has called a "very gritty, hardcore, faithful adaptation".
