Jonah Hex and The Wolfman Are Potential Oscar Nominees (Seriously)
01.14.11 by Ryan
It was a given that Jonah Hex was heading for a Razzie nomination after director Jimmy Hayward's adaptation of the DC comic book received scathing reviews and limped to a total of $10 million at the box office. Just when it couldn't get any worse, Jonah Hex star Josh Brolin even admitted in September that he wasn't a fan of the movie either. There could be a bright spot, however, because Jonah Hex could win an Academy Award nomination.
HitFix reports Jonah Hex is among seven finalists announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for a Best Make-up Oscar. Another contender is The Wolfman, which was similarly beaten up by critics and recently had its director, Joe Johnston, describe the production as a "leaky, rudderless ship in a perfect storm suffering from bad decisions, infighting, reluctance of the powers-that-be to take responsibility, and too many under-qualified cooks in the kitchen."
Take heart, Joe. Only Alice in Wonderland, True Grit, The Way Back, The Fighter, Barney's Version and Jonah Hex stand in your way of an Academy Award nomination, so something went right.
With the finalists announced, members of the Academy's make-up branch will convene on Jan. 22 to watch ten-minute segments of each movie and vote for the three movies that will ultimately receive an Oscar nomination. All nominees will be announced on Jan. 25.
Nominees for the Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies, will be announced on Jan. 24. Both The Wolfman and Jonah Hex are on the Razzie shortlist — Jonah Hex for worst picture and The Wolfman for worst actress (Emily Blunt). But could both miss out on a Razzie and end up with an Oscar nomination? We'll find out in a few weeks.
