Hot on the heels of filming YA book-to-movie adaptations Beastly and I Am Number Four, it looks like 20-year-old British actor Alex Pettyfer could be swapping aliens for shadowhunters in the Mortal Instruments movies, starting with City of Bones. Reports suggest Pettyfer has been offered the role of main man Jace Wayland, and could sign on the dotted contract line as early as next week.
Fans of Cassandra Clare's New York Times bestselling series will be jumping for joy as this news makes its way around the fandom. Pettyfer has been a favorite among fans for years, with petitions and sites created with the sole purpose of seeing him cast in the movie.
Jace Wayland is a buff blond boy with numerous rune marks on his skin, a kick-ass self-defence repetoire and a no-nonsense attitude with the ability to make girls everywhere fall at his booted feet. In the popularity stakes, he's second only to the boys from Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga, and is fast becoming a household name among teenagers worldwide.
Movie plans are ticking along nicely, with Lily Collins recently cast as Clary Fray, Jace Wayland's love interest. Shooting is set to start in March, with producers hoping to secure Pettyfer as soon as possible. With him already signed to reprise his role as Number Four in Disney's Lorian Legacies franchise, we can't help but wonder if he'd be taking on too much. Conflicting schedules would be at the top of the problem list, especially if The Mortal Instruments achieves global domination as planned. What do you think -- could it be done? Do you want him to play Jace, or would you prefer an unknown? Let us know in the comments.
