Since well before Christopher Nolan even officially signed on to direct the third installment in the Batman franchise — heck, before it even had the title The Dark Knight Rises — rumors were rampant on the internet that Joseph Gordon-Levitt, one of the stars of Nolan's mind-bending sci-fi thriller Inception, would have a starring role in the movie.
Many believed that he would be playing Edward Nigma, aka the Riddler, a classic Batman villain known for his penchant for giving Batman clues to his crimes in the form of riddles. Others speculated that Gordon-Levitt would be brought in to play a cameo role as the Joker because of his resemblance to Heath Ledger, something Nolan has ruled out.
After the recent announcement that Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway would be joining the cast as Bane and Catwoman, respectively, talk of Gordon-Levitt's involvement pretty much dried up. Now, Deadline, which has a great track record for getting accurate scoops about upcoming movies, has reported that Gordon-Levitt is in talks to star in The Dark Knight Rises. What character Gordon-Levitt will play was not specified, but Deadline stated that "he will be in the movie when Nolan starts production this spring."
