Director Zack Snyder's Superman franchise reboot has just gained its second cast member and first Academy
Award nominee. In a press release distributed yesterday, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures announced that Diane Lane, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Unfaithful (2002), will star in Superman: The Man of Steel (working title) as Martha Kent, the kind-hearted Kansan who, along with her husband, Jonathan, found and raised the orphaned alien baby, the "Last Son" of the doomed planet of Krypton. Lane joins British actor Henry Cavill, who was cast in January as Kal-El, aka Clark Kent, aka Superman.
The press release also included this statement from Snyder about Lane being cast as Martha Kent:
This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.
Superman: The Man of Steel is being produced by Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan, and Snyder's wife, Deborah. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer, co-writer of both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, from an idea conceived by Nolan and Goyer. No start date has been announced as of yet. The movie is slated for a December 2012 release.
