Only days after it was announced that Justin Bieber: Never Say Never director Jon Chu would likely be taking over directing duties from Stephen Sommers on the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Paramount has announced that G.I. Joe 2 (working title) will be released in theaters Aug. 10, 2012. Interestingly, actress Rachel Nichols, who played Scarlett in Rise of the Cobra, recently revealed that only a few characters would return for the sequel and now THR is speculating that Chu, who is still in negotiations to direct G.I. Joe 2, will "likely" make "extensive casting changes."
The writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland) are currently at work on the script for G.I. Joe 2. The movie is expected to go into production this fall.
Paramount also offered up a release date of Nov. 23rd for Martin Scorsese's latest movie, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, the Academy Award-winning director's first 3-D animated movie. Based on Brian Selznick's 526-page book of the same name, Hugo Cabret was written for the screen by John Logan, who wrote Scorsese's The Aviator, and tells the story of an orphan boy named Hugo who lives in the walls of a Paris train station. The cast includes Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen and Sir Ben Kingsley.
