Shane Black Confirms He Will Write Iron Man 3

Last month, writer/director Shane Black was handed the director's chair for Iron Man 3, now that Jon Favreau has moved on to directing Magic Kingdom for Disney. What wasn't clear was whether Black, known first as a screenwriter of action movies like Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, was going to write the script as well. Black recently confirmed that he will.
Black was a panelist at the Omaha Film Festival and talked about a project, and a AICN reader was there and reported about what Black has to say. According to the report, Black is planning to meet with Robert Downey Jr. this week, and that Downey Jr. will contribute to the sequel's story that Black will write. Both actor and director have worked together before in 2005's Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.
As for the story for the third Iron Man, Black revealed that Marvel wasn't pleased with the direction of Iron Man 2, therefore Iron Man 3 wouldn't be another "two men in iron suits fighting each other" movie. Black reportedly "powwowed" with Marvel executives about his take on Iron Man 3 before he landed the gig, and that take is apparently a Tom Clancy-inspired thriller where Iron Man will fight "real world villains."
Iron Man 3 obviously won't be made until after Marvel's superhero team-up The Avengers, and, surprisingly, won't feature other Avengers characters. Apparently, Marvel's game plan is to use the solo superhero movies like Thor and Captain America: The First Avengers and Iron Man 2 to prepare audiences for The Avengers, but any individual sequel that comes after will feature the Marvel characters in solo adventures.
