Zack Snyder Reveals He Wants to "Fix" Superman with "Realism"

Director Zack Snyder is trying to promote his upcoming Sucker Punch movie, but can't escape questions about his next project, Superman: The Man of Steel. Snyder recently revealed that his Superman will take that approach that "there’s been no other [Superman] movies" before it, an idea which may have been born from Snyder's perspective that the Superman franchise needs to be fixed. When talking with HollywoodOutbreak, Snyder revealed that, as a movie franchise, Superman is "broken."
I think Superman is broken and needs to be fixed, from a movie standpoint. He is the frickin' biggest superhero on the planet, he is the why of all superheroes, the father of every superhero.
Like, we were just talking about this: I'm like, really, Thor? Thor has a movie? Like, really? And there's no Superman movie? It's like the world is out of balance. It's like we lost our minds here people, come on.
Snyder admitted that he was felt he would be able to make "a cool Superman movie" once he sat down with Superman producers Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas.
When Chris and Emma asked Debbie [Snyder] and I to go to lunch they told us their story of what they wanted to do with Superman. And before I was like "I don't know." [But] I didn't need to hear that much before I go, "Ok, that's right. That's the right way to do it." From my point of view, at this point, it's so needed that it's hard. And I'm a fan of the character. I want him to be awesome.
Part of Snyder's solution is to take a realistic approach with Superman, telling ScreenRant that Superman might be "the most realistic movie" Snyder has ever made.
I think the visual style of Superman, though I can’t say for certain as it’s early, but I kind of feel like — and I did say to the studio — that what’s cool for me and interesting, and odd, is that Superman is probably going to be the most realistic movie I’ve ever made. It’s kind of fun that the most realistic movie I probably will make is a movie called Superman. Which shows how crazy my other movies are. Because I guess for him to be credible... He gets more credible by the reality that you can bring to him, you know emotionally, and visually, I think.
Acting out the reality of the movie is Henry Cavill, who won the lead role above several other contenders. Joining Cavill is Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Superman's parents. Snyder told io9 that casting the two actors was another sign of the realism he is bringing to the source material by making Superman's parents "real people".
I think the thing you realize when you look at Diane and Kevin, in our decision to cast them so far, you sort of get a sense of how tonally we're looking at the movie, and what you realize is that those guys are serious actors, and we're taking this s**t f**king seriously in terms of the tone of having those guys. You're talking about having a situation where whatever the action is or whatever the drama of the movie is, our first priority is to make sure it's rendered in the most realistic way we can get at.
So, wait a minute. Is Snyder saying that Superman IV: The Quest for Peace wasn't realistic?
